Sukiyaki (cover) / Seam / Sukiyaki 7” (1999)
The cover: Performed by Seam, Sooyoung Park’s great forgotten ’90s Chicago dream-rock band. Vocals by Yan Pan. Ajax Records pressed 1000 copies of this 7”, which was Seam’s final release and featured a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” as the B-side.
The original: “Sukiyaki reached number one for three weeks on the Billboard top 100 in 1963. It was performed by the great Kyu Sakamoto (RIP). Music by Hachidai Nakamura and the lyrics by Rokusuke Ei.” Released in Japan as “Ue O Muite Aruko” (“I Look Up When I Walk”).
A cube, a sphere, a pyramid obeying the laws of the ocean. A cube, a sphere, a pyramid, a cylinder. A blue cube. A white sphere. A white pyramid. A white cylinder. We will not make any more moves. Silence. The species marches on with jabbering eyes. A green cube. A blue sphere. A white pyramid. A black cylinder. Like the dreams one hardly remembers; worlds where the shark, the knife, and the cook are synonyms. A black cube. A black pyramid. A sphere and a black cylinder. I prefer to close my eyes and walk into the night. The squid’s ink will describe the clouds and the distant earth. A yellow sphere. A yellow pyramid. A yellow cube that melts in the water, the air, and the fire.

Usually, when we win we jump up once or twice in the locker room. Tonight we let them jump up and down three or four times. We let them have their fill…

We got a new universe coming and he’s going to control all our universes. We’re going to put our universes together.
Kingston Dub / King Tubby & The Dynamites / Sound System International Dub (1974)
= Leave It To Beaver thru the ganja filter.
Below is a compilation of songs that appear in the 2010 three-part miniseries Carlos about the terrorist/revolutionary/romantic Carlos the Jackal. The film is a mixed bag and the music is frequently anachronistic, but the tunes themselves are the tops. Each of the 28 on this makeshift Carlos Soundtrack appears on a relevant list (e.g. here, here, and here). Drop a line if you have any of the five selections marked as “not collected” or other songs used in the miniseries that aren’t listed below.
